Hello Everyone, this is Global CPA.
Over the past few years, I have become increasingly interested in how international accounting education is expanding beyond traditional markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, or Singapore. Recently, while visiting Uzbekistan and learning more about Central Asia, I started thinking seriously about how global accounting qualifications such as ACCA and USCPA are gradually becoming more important in emerging economies as well.
As a worker who has worked in the accounting profession in Korea, pursued ACCA, USCPA while studying professional accountancy at the University of London, I naturally became curious about how accounting professionals in other regions build their careers and access international education opportunities.
In this article, I would like to briefly organize my thoughts on:
- The accounting qualification systems in Central Asia and the Middle East
- Why international qualifications such as ACCA and USCPA are becoming increasingly important
- How students in these regions actually study accounting today
- Why I believe global accounting education will continue to expand across borders in the future
Central Asia: From Soviet-Era Accounting to IFRS and Global Qualifications
Countries such as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan historically inherited accounting systems influenced by the Soviet Union. In the past, regional certifications such as CAP (Certified Accounting Practitioner) and CIPA (Certified International Professional Accountant) were commonly used within Central Asia and CIS countries.
However, over the last decade, many Central Asian countries have started moving toward international accounting standards such as IFRS while also strengthening cooperation with global professional organizations.
For example, Uzbekistan has recently been promoting accounting reforms and professional development initiatives in cooperation with ACCA. The country has also been expanding IFRS adoption and encouraging the modernization of its accounting profession through international partnerships.

One thing I personally found interesting is that younger professionals in Central Asia appear to be increasingly interested in qualifications that provide international mobility rather than only local recognition.
In many cases, international qualifications such as ACCA or USCPA are viewed not only as professional certifications, but also as pathways toward:
- Big 4 careers
- multinational companies
- Gulf-region opportunities
- international remote work
- migration and cross-border career development
The Middle East: Already a Highly International Accounting Market
Compared to Central Asia, the Middle East is already deeply integrated into the global accounting industry.
Countries such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait have large multinational business environments, extensive IFRS usage, and strong Big 4 presence. Because of this, international accounting qualifications are highly recognized across the region.
In particular, ACCA has established a strong presence in many Gulf countries. USCPA is also highly valued, especially in multinational companies, consulting firms, and American-affiliated businesses.
Another interesting point is that NASBA currently offers international USCPA testing centers in several Middle Eastern countries, including:
- Bahrain
- Kuwait
- Saudi Arabia
- UAE
- Jordan
- Lebanon
This shows how globalized the accounting profession has already become.

How Students Actually Study: The Rise of Online Accounting Education
One of the most fascinating things I noticed while researching this topic is how global accounting education is increasingly becoming online-first.
Unlike the traditional image of accounting education being limited to universities or expensive offline academies, many students today rely heavily on:
- online lectures
- YouTube
- digital notes
- global forums
- affordable international learning platforms
For ACCA students especially, one of the most widely used platforms globally is OpenTuition.
OpenTuition provides:
- free ACCA lectures
- free study notes
- practice support
- technical explanations
and has become an important learning resource for students from developing economies who may not have access to expensive tuition providers.
Official ACCA resources are also heavily utilized, including:
- technical articles
- past papers
- examiner reports
- study support materials
In many ways, accounting education is becoming more globally accessible than ever before.

My Personal Reflection
I do not consider myself an expert on emerging markets or international development economics. However, as someone who has spent years working in accounting while continuously pursuing international qualifications, I find it fascinating to observe how global accounting education is evolving.
In the past, geography played a much bigger role in determining educational access and professional opportunities. Today, however, someone in Tashkent, Seoul, Dubai, or Kuala Lumpur can often study from the same online resources, prepare for the same professional exams, and pursue similar global career opportunities.
Of course, challenges still exist:
- language barriers
- cost of education
- local economic conditions
- access to mentorship
But overall, I believe international accounting education will continue to expand across borders over the next decade.
And perhaps more importantly, I believe the future accounting profession will increasingly reward people who can combine:
- technical knowledge
- international communication
- adaptability
- and cross-border professional thinking.
As I continue my own journey through ACCA, USCPA, and international accounting education, I hope to keep documenting these observations and learning more about how the profession is evolving around the world.
Thank you for reading.
